RPM MORTGAGE, INC. DONATES $10,000 TO THE GUNNAR SANDBERG FOUNDATION FUND

RPM Mortgage, Inc. generously donated $10,000 yesterday to the Gunnar Sandberg Foundation in an effort to support the recovery of 17-year-old Gunnar Sandberg.

Sandberg, a junior at Marin Catholic High School, went into a coma about a month ago after being hit in the head by a 100 mph line drive while pitching at a baseball game against De La Salle High School. He has now awoken from the coma and is starting to walk and talk again, but it is a slow recovery process.

Sandberg’s coach, Dominic Pomilia, is also one of RPM’s top loan agents and is Branch Manager of the Mill Valley office. Pomilia has been coaching Gunnar for the 3 years he has been attending Marin Catholic and has been coaching at MCHS for a total of 14 years.

Rob and Tracey Hirt, CEO and President of RPM Mortgage, Inc. felt that donating to Gunnar’s foundation fund would help with his recovery and further the community support.

“Our hearts go out to Gunnar and his family,” said Tracey Hirt. “This was truly a tragic accident and we wish him a speedy recovery. When Dominic Pomilia reached out to the RPM family for support, we as parents felt compelled to help.”

Dominic mentioned that he has been overwhelmed by the response and supportiveness of all the surrounding communities for Gunnar.

“When a child is hurt, it hits all of us,” said Pomilia. “We can’t help but think of our own children, nieces, nephews, etc. and this is the case with Gunnar. This is supposed to be a fun sport that keeps our kids healthy and out of trouble, it is not supposed to injure them. Yet, the reality is that it sometimes does. Thankfully, Gunnar is young and strong in body and mind. He has a community that is praying for him and supporting him in every way possible.”

In response to the accident, Marin County Athletic League has voted unanimously to use wooden bats for the remainder of the season.

“Gunnar is a pebble in the water that has created incredible waves,” said Pomilia. “The fact that wood bats are now mandatory in all high schools in Marin County is a testament to this. I will forever be grateful to all the people that have stepped forward and helped Gunnar and his family.”

If you would like to make a donation to support Gunnar’s recovery, you can make a check payable to the Gunnar Sandberg Fund and drop it off at any Bank of Marin location.
